is it safe to use recycled plastic bottles as a starter pot for my plants? ?
i have a ton of powerade bottles and instead of throwing them out, i've decided to cut the tops off, and poke a few holes at the bottom and use them as starter pots for my veggies i want to plant this spring. i have many diffrent seedlings in them such as pumpkin, tomatoes, onions, radishes, cilantro, beans, etc...
Now is this safe? I've decided that I want to start gardening ALL organic now, and I don't want plastic to leach into the soil and into the plants. Since these plants are under the light won't this make the plastic photodegrade and break into the plastic?
what do you guys think, thanks!
This post was edited when I had a chance to review my link I meant to add on once I had read it throughly. I think your concerns for photodegradation of these plastics are valid. There are chemicals used in manufacture of plastics that can mimic human hormones and have been shown to leech from #2 and #3 plastics. With the rise of neurlogical problems in Children and breast cancer in women our rising dependence on plastic food and beverage containers must be considered as a potential risk factor.
Recycle the bottles and leave the plastics to the Astronauts that need to keep the payload down. Follow the advice about peat cup or making cups from newspaper. The everyday consumer might better be served with returning to media for storage of bygone eras. Ever noticed that a coke from a plastic jug is just not as good as from an ice cold classic style glass bottle?
And if to anyone who has never enjoyed home pickled dill pole beans from an ancient ball jar that has passed from one church lady to another over many harvest seasons I mourn your tastebuds loss. In the uncertain times we live in knowing how to grow ones own food and prepare it for storage is a better antianxiety agent than Eli-Lily corp can cook up in a lab from inorganic heavy elements.
But as in all things, do what you must from an economic and efficiency standpoint and don't freak out about every new bogie on the horizion. I wouldn't trade indoor plumbing, antibiotics and aspirin for the hunter gatherer life of the Bush People visited by Anthony Bourdaine of the Travel Channel, though their purity of heart and truly organic lives are inspirational.
